Statement regarding the cessation of sanctions on Syria

The Syrian Democratic Council expresses its deep appreciation for the decision of His Excellency the President of the United States of America, Mr. Donald Trump, regarding the suspension of sanctions imposed on Syria, as this decision carries positive indicators that directly serve the interest of the Syrian people. The Council also highly appreciates the constructive role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, along with a number of regional actors, in supporting efforts aimed at alleviating human suffering and achieving détente in the Syrian file.

This step represents a glimmer of hope for Syrians who are exhausted by years of war, blockade and economic pressures, and opens the door of hope towards alleviating suffering and enhancing the chances of a comprehensive political solution that guarantees the unity of Syria and the safety of its people in all its components.

The Council hopes that this development will constitute an important step on the road to correcting the political track, ensuring a comprehensive and full-fledged transitional process that represents the aspirations of all components of the Syrian people and contributes to building a democratic, pluralistic, decentralised, modern state in which peace, stability and prosperity prevail.
