Statement to the public opinion on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of the 12th March 2004 uprising

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the 12th March 2004, uprising, which formed a milestone in the Kurdish people’s struggle against injustice and tyranny, where the Baati regime faced peaceful demonstrators with bullets and arrests, forbidden in its repressive approach.

That uprising was a resounding cry against injustice, planting seeds of change and removing walls of fear, paving the way for the Syrian Revolution that started in March 2011.

Today, in a new historic setting, Syrians are turning a page from dictatorship after the fall of the Ba’ist regime last December, to usher in a new phase based on justice, national partnership and respect for pluralism.

Events have proven that the will to change is more powerful than the tools of repression, and while remembering this memory carries valuable lessons, proving that the sacrifices accumulate a legacy of war that drives the wheel of change.

We in the Democratic Council of Syria, reaffirm our commitment to work for a multiple democratic Syria, uphold rights, uphold dignity, and put an end to the tragedies Syrians have suffered for decades.

The road to a better future is through strengthening national partnership, upholding the values of coexistence and peace, and embarking on a political building based on historical justice.

Glory and eternity to the martyrs of freedom, and victory to the will of the peoples.
